Bird watching sea tours

Come exploring with us to Hauraki Gulf islands.

Our Kawau Is  trip includes walks on the island and close observation of bush fauna, flora, and bird life.  On the water we drift amongst sea birds feeding in flocks and pass by little blue penguins bobbing in the waves. Visit Mansion house and gardens-the residence of Governor George Grey .If the seas are calm we can traverse the seaward side of the island and reefs.

On Rangitoto Island bring strong shoes to tread paths over lava flows. The lava rock has led to unique vegetation-very little water to maintain growth .Mangroves thrive in the mud flats. Pohutukawa are growing well since the possum eradication during the late nineties. Rangitoto volcano is extinct. We allow time for a swim at a safe sandy beach near the lighthouse. Marvel at the geological formations. How about an hours fishing in the vicinity?. Its likely you will observe large ships entering the port of Auckland in the distant channel. Should you be interested in navigation mention this when booking and we will point out landmarks and follow our passage on the  naval charts.

Waiheke Is

A perfect getaway less than one hour from Auckland CBD.  A mix of vineyards, farms, forest, beaches and olive groves.  Join us for a beach walk and swim on Onetangi or Palm Beach. We traverse some of the coastal areas of Waiheke, stopping at Matiatia to walk on the ridge and experience wide views.  We disembark at Kennedy Point and after a short walk visit Waiheke’s only certified organic wine producer-enjoy a vineyard Tour including tasting .  On our return to Auckland we pass Motuihe  Is - the historic quarantine facility.  Return with a brief harbour tour, via Devonport passing the container wharves, the Viaduct Basin, and the Harbour bridge.

Tiritiri Matangi Is

A nature reserve situated 4km east of Whangaparoa Peninsular (30 kms from CBD).  Protected birdlife, the kiwi, takahe, saddleback, stitchbird, and kokako have been introduced.  This is a predator free environment.  Your bags must be checked for rodents and insects.  Footware, clothes and bags must be clean.  Walking tracks skirt the island and paths and roadways weave through the interior.  Boardwalks cut through the coastal forests.  Since 1984 more than 300,000 native trees have been planted by teams of volunteers.  The bright green kakariki native parrot flying in the forest canopy and around flax bushes are proof of this most successful project.  Allow a couple of hours wandering from the beach to the lighthouse built in 1864, and other bird watching tracks.

Motuihe Is

Motuihe Island is situated nearby Waiheke. There is a sizable wharf, used extensively in the past for quarantine purposes.A famous German soldier was imprisoned here during the 1st World War-Count Felix Von Lckner. German settlers from both NZ and Samoa were interred. In 1872 a ship brought smallpox into Auckland Harbourand Motuihe was declared a human quarantine area. Later in 1918, when a World Wide influenza epidemic (pandemic) struck Motuihe was needed. This outbreak overpowered the small island. Grave sites mark these tragic times.Nowadays it is possible to camp on this attractive island and enjoy the solitude and nature.WE can provide camping equipment.   Call 021 190 3919 for a quote.

Motukorea  Is

Motukorea or Browns Island (A volcanic cone) is a favourite spot for Birdwatchers.-a threatened NZ Dotterel has a colony .Also Oyster catchers frequent the shores. Camping is not permitted, but we can arrange a berth for 2 persons in an anchored vessel, or alternatively camping at nearby Motuihe for 6 persons.  WE suggest combining this visit with an explore of Motuihe Is ( 2 day trip). Call 021 190 3919 for a quote

Rakino Is (possible 2 day excursion)

Rakino –a small island NE of Motutapu, with lovely bays .The wharf is at Sandy Bay. Home Bay originally attracted Sir George Grey who bought Rakino in 1862. He later moved on to Kawau Is .The pick of the anchorages is at Woody Bay. We can arrange your island overnite  accomodation or alternatively camping at Motuihe is another option WE provide all the gear and food..The Rakino Channel is a top fishing spot.
